Tattoo is about pain tolerance in an hour or more for thelife-long of loving the final outcome of it. Clients must know their artistswell before giving in. Sometimes, persons who have a tattoo machine can’talready be called a tattoo artist. It takes a lots of hardwork, patience anddiscipline. Wannabes should have ataste for this kind of art and know some visual techniques. He must practicemore on paper the ways of shading and toning. Skin isn’t like a canvass for oiland arches paper for watercolor. You can’t undo it when things go wrong. Youcan’t just crumple it when turned out to be unlikable. We must value ourclients for in them we can see our fulfillment in this passion upon seeing thempleased.

More often, I do a tattoo session every weekend. This is theonly time when I can fully focus my passion. Clients, who want some design thatsatisfy their longing for this art, can negotiate and have some short talk forthe concept they needed before enduring the pain. Always trust the artistbefore being inked. He has more in mind of creating designs but make sure thatyou’re design is met. Ask advice before and during the session on what to dothat in a way you’re comfortable enough as the session goes. Needless to say, clients in my homeplace trusted me enough for they are my personal friends andthus, I can freely do in any add-ons with the approved design.

August 15, 2011 – Cebu Ink Conference was held at KOA TreeHouse , formerly Kukus Nest, Lahug Cebu City. It was made through the effort ofa Cebu tattoo artist Zairex Gantuangco, whom I admired most for his unceasingsharing of knowledge for this art and this was sponsored by Pinoy Body Arts ofSir Don Baranda with Mr Tommy Ringwalt, the President and CEO of Tommys Supplyand Starbrite Colors.

Cebu’s top tattoo artists were there that, in a way, gavesome boost for the freelancer and newbie in the industry. I can name only a fewthem because I don’t know some of the artist personally. Others I only knewthrough social website networking especially in Facebook while some of them Ipersonally met in tattoo conventions. Presents there were Zai, Ryan Bernardino,Carlo Gabiana and his brother Vanvan, Ronnie Macapagal, Wendell Yap, JCVerdida, Dencio Ceniza, Harry Ruiz, Paolo Abellana, Mikki Blanco, DuanceGacasan, Frances Flordelis and Benson Gascon.

Things were discussed on how the Starbrite skin ink came inexistence and its development to be one of the most renowned skin inks in thetattoo world today. Information on how the ink was made through a keenscrutinization under the microscope and tested in avoidance of skin allergy,made us wooed for their products. A lot of tips and instructions on tattoo’saftercare since our country is tropical thus, must be protected from sun’sheat. The higher the SPF, the better it cares the newly done tattoo. Colorsthat usually give rashes for a tattoo are red and purple because of its mercurysulfide content.

Raffles were initiated for attendees' consolation. Names weredrawn for mini tattoo machines and fortunately it was my name on the first pick.Such a nice souvenir for us since it can’t be found in our local market and canonly be classified as collectors item because of its availability.

Let’s us all support our local tattoo artists. We’re sograteful for the time given for this event by all artists present, Mr. TomRingwalt and to Sir Don Baranda for the support in this industry who made thisevent a successful one.

FRAMEWORK

Theobjective of the rules and regulations of this competition is to setthe framework for a competitive event conducted under a safe, fair, andsport-manlike manner.

It should also be noted that it is impossible to make rules for alleventuality and that there will be specific verbal rules attached tocertain stages of the competition. It is therefore the responsibilityof the team as a whole and the team leader in particular, to take noteof these specific regulations and abide by them.

The OPERATION KASAMAHAN 6 a Friendly Airsoft Competition is facilitated by the TIGER COMMANDO (OMEGA RED Airsoft Sports Club)

- The facilitator reserves the right to accept or deny entry of any competitor and or team.
- Each team can registered of up to a minimum of 15 soldiers.
-Pre-registration (until August 12, 2011 (Friday)) is set at THREEEHUNDRED pesos (Php 300.00) for packmeals only"LUNCH/TSHIRT/CERTIFICATE"
* The registration fee is non-refundable and is inclusive of:
-lunch
-souvenir shirts (only to be given to pre-registrants)
-awards and team certificates both team

-Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis and will constitute full acceptance of the
Game/technical/facilitator’s rules.
-The competition is limited to only (12) teams, so send your registration fee earlier.
- Incase of force majeure, the event may be modified, postponed or canceled.
- Only registered players with signed waiver and the right outfit for the game will be allowed to play.
- All teams must provide their own mandatory and optional equipment,borrowing of mandatory equipment from other teams is prohibited.
-All teams will submit their final list of members one hour before thestart of the competition. Or they can send their final list to theorganizer as soon as possible the better.
- Multiple registration or “proxy” playing is not allowed.
- Violation to any of these rules will be grounds for disqualification.
-Automatic Electric Guns only. Gas operated weapons, with the exceptionof pistols are prohibited. Maximum FPS is 450 @ 0.20 g BBs.
- Banned substances/equipments are not allowed

*Alcoholic beverages during the competition
*Theorganization reserves the right to withhold any equipment that could bedetrimental to the safety of the competitor and or other players orprovide undue advantage to the team.
- UNIFORMS
*Teams are encouraged to wear their team uniforms during the competition
*Competingteams will be provided with colored arm band which will serve asmarkers. Removing of arm band marker during a skirmish will penalizethe team and will be ground for disqualification.

INKTRADA Tacloban Tattoo Convention 2011

Off from work just to join the tattoo competition, we arrived at Tacloban's astrodome past 11:00 am which was too early for the 2pm-7pm designated time for the compe. I felt very relax at the venue since the dome is located near the sea. The convention was my second time I have attended as an exposure to the industry where my craftsmanship belong. A passion in which I can freely express myself. In a given of 5 hours, most of us completed each piece of design within 3-4 hours. The category of the competition was Black and Grey with a minimum dimensions of 5" x 8". This is my second portrait tattoo done in my year of tattooing.

This tattoo was done during the tattoo competition held in CAP auditorium in Jones Ave., Cebu City. My first competition and first portrait tattoo attempt in the Beginner's category. A John Lennon tattoo which I think the reference is not his familiar photo that somehow many saw it like an old Harry Potter. Yet, the result in his skin is not that bad though and I love the washes of witch hazel. Just a few sessions for a portrait and I know, someday, I can make it better.

Henna tattoo turned permanent

Persons who love henna tattoo or temporary tattoo are undoubtedly fascinated with the permanent body art. They only fear of getting the permanent by consequences it is being linked. The norms of hardly getting job, parents won’t probably like, persons around you may think about your tattoo the other way around and the pain the machine gives are the things that wrap-up their hesitation.

After getting hennaed for two days, the design in her back has been turned into permanent. Wings with an inverted G-clef seem like an angel who fell in love with music. Our first session lasted for almost 8 hours of enduring pain with breaks in between.

Another henna turned permanent is a design of a warrior with a spear done for almost 3 hours.

Added a polynesian cross in his chest which incorporate his existing polynesian sleeve tattoo.

Tattoos are now socially accepted. It’s been said that our body is a temple but when will we redecorate our temple to make it new and grand? Mora sad ug naay tattoo ang artist ba. Hahaha. AB rh+ man gud akong dugo, pangitaunon daw. I have to donate sa before having some pero sa tinuod wala pa koy design. Have ask some studio but the price is too expensive for me. A full sleeve tattoo worth P20,000. Ha? *sigh

Koi and Geisha Tattoo

While setting up machines and other things needed for a tattoo session, we’re in front of a television watching for NBA 2011 slamdunk and Donaire’s boxing in the other channel. We had our breakfast past 10 am as planned to start before lunchtime yet, we didn’t proceed until the slamdunk ended. With the use of thermal paper, my koi and geisha design (her daughter) were stenciled so that the portrait is accurate in proportion. But as the session started, we suddenly stopped and went back to the living room to watch as Montiel knocked out in the 2^nd round of the main event.

This was the so far the large piece I’ve done when I started tattooing early last year. Probably the design will be completed within 3 meetings since the client has only an average level of pain tolerance. As the session grew in hours, his leg was shaking every touch of the needle in his skin. The last part that was inked is the sakura tree located at the back of his leg.

First session - the outlines, two more sessions to go… :)

The group grows in size after its existence 3 years ago. Formed by some bloggers who wanted to promote Cebu and offers services for the betterment in our community, CBSi has done some program outreaching our less fortunate Cebuanos and helping them in their most needy time. Inspiring works will still be on the roll as the group continue to grow, building strong relationship among members and our fellowmen as well. Minds of different interests linked and bonded as one leading for a common goal.

This is the art I love the most though I’m just a newbie for this media but the fact that this would forever be in the body of your clients made me think that they will always remember you as their artist. Satisfaction in our side as the clients love our artworks. I’m still learning in this and getting tips from the pros, asking things that somehow turn to be useful for future references. I love seeing tattoo conventions and registering tattoo websites as to create and come up with new ideas and original designs.

Face Painting

Last January 16, we stationed our tent beside the Crown Regency in Jones Avenue, Cebu City. We started our session after our breakfast with a few clients since the rain was pouring down. By noon, lines for those who wanted some henna tattoo extended that made us alternately took our lunch so that work must go on. Four of us, artists, seem didn't know each other due to the busyness per client. We rated our work 30-50-100 depending on the design and the size of the tattoo. We also do some face paintings with a minimum of P50.

Our annual activity in line with the Sinulog celebration made us reminisce our past as our college mates were there visiting the venue where we, as a group, usually gathered for the same activity 13 years ago.

PINATIKAI 2011 - A night of Music and Ink was held last January 15, a day before the Grand Sinulog Parade, at the Mango Square Roofdeck, Mango Avenue, Cebu City. Tattoo artists and enthusiasts gathered to join and witness this annual tattoo convention. Gate was open at 12 noon and the contest began by 2:00 pm with a registration of P50 for all the participants and spectators. Though the weather wasn't fair but the event was successful. Congrats to all the winners!

Driven by the conflict in their own place, Badjao, who are native from Sulu, moved to other neighboring places. For their survival in their new environment, sometimes, we can see them in the streets begging for foods. I can see them more often in pier area since I always travel every weekend from Cebu to Leyte via sea. They’ll get closer to the docking ship where passengers will likely to throw some goods and coins into the sea and for them to catch and submerge for the flipping coins. Some of their companions will race with their motor-driven-boats for the arriving ship which came usually from Manila and begging for money and food.

The girls in this painting seemed shy and reluctant since they were teased by some of the passengers. The little boy, whom I think a 2 years of age, was very busy opening some cracker given by a generous traveler. The only thing amazed me was that the boy knew already how to swim in his young age. In all day, they’re soaked and wet in their boat and no wonder that their hair became blond and the skin complexion became dark. Sometimes they are called Sea Nomads. They became boat dwellers due to their occupation and built stilt houses in a fertile fishing ground.

Tree of Life

Tree of life or the coconut tree is common in the Philippines. In fact, the coconut industry is considered a major exporting sector that provides livelihood to 1/3 of our population. This a tree of a thousand uses because of its endless list of products and by-products derived from its various parts. This can provide everything that people need in life to survive - food, shelter, fuel - name it, the coconut has it.

The young coconut fruit attracted me to take its photo and decided to have it in paints. Though the structure of it flowers makes the subject messy but the freshness of its young coconut fruits give life (nga ba?) to this painting. Another artwork added for a display in our house and hoping that someday, these paintings will become part of an art exhibit in our hometown.

Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis - this is a biological transformation from one stage to the next in history of life. This process is tantamount to the stages of our deep romantic or sexual attachment to someone. We fall in love. We nurture it with care and as time passes by, we end up in each others’ arm.

These paintings were done in a week-long vacant time at night. A simple gift for a friend’s wedding day. A nice representation on how their love bloomed just like a butterfly that freely flies wherever it may go from a simple egg.

To the newly wed couple, good luck and welcome to the next stage in life and am hoping that you’ll stay together through thick and thin that life may bring.

Tiger Tattoo

Last Saturday, I was printing t-shirts for the Alumni of the Sisters of Mary School, Inc, Cebu when my batchmate sent a message that he will be coming in our office after lunch. He was interested to have a tattoo before our final basketball game (playing for 3rd place) that was scheduled last Sunday at the Boystown. Eventhough, I told him that it's not advisable to have tattoo and play a physical game a day after it is done, we still proceeded the 3-hour long of enduring the pain. He wanted a tiger with a wave-flow design depicting his inner self's strength and might of overcoming hardships in life.

Since I don't have a thermal paper for stenciling or a surgical pen, I always use Pilot V5 pen in drafting the design in the body. This application is hard especially for an artist who relies in tracing designs and uses stencils since every wipe after the ink is applied, the lines of the sketch will also be erased.

Tirso Ardiente - my batchmate who owns this tattoo didn't play anyway and only celebrated after the game. But he coached us the whole game bagging the 3rd prize of the Fr. Al's Cup 2010.

As I arrived late last night in my boarding house, I noticed that some my fabric paints were not in place. I started to check if the old paints are still usable. Since I have nothing to do that night and with extra white tshirt I began sketching the image of Mother Mary found in the magazine. Somehow, this gives me an idea of painting my own customized tshirts for a change. Usually, I used photographic silkscreen printing for my other tshirts but I can say that the hand painted design is more artistic than the former.

Michael Abundo - a friend of mine and a fellow airsoft enthusiast requested to have a painting of this character. His relish to have such came from a bond of airsofters that he formed and called it as Wolverines – Hindang Airsoft Team.

Wolverine is a fictional character and a superhero. Known to be a member of X-men. A mutant known as Logan who possessed an animal-keen senses. He has a retracting metal claws in both hands as his main weapon and invulnerable from wounds because of his healing factor. The healing factor also slows down his aging process, enabling him to live beyond a normal human lifespan and can only be seen in Fantasy World.

Am not fond of using charcoal pencil. Since I’m trying to use this medium, I should love the art of this blackish residue consisting of impure carbon brushed gradually for a better result. Charcoal leaves a track that is darker, velvety and it can be spread much easier and finer using brush. I’m no pro regarding this medium but I love to paint as much as I love to learn the different medium in visual and graphic arts.

I have painted this as a present for my friend’s hubby who celebrated his natal day a week ago. Can’t ignore or refuse her request, since she’s one of a kind friend. I didn’t sell this work but she provided me the paper, pencil and the brushes. This only tells that I don’t have enough materials in such medium. I’m still learning about this. Somehow, I have tried to do things that I love.

Art is accusation, expression, passion. It is a fight to the finish between black charcoal and white paper.

Water Pump

This is our barangay water pump. Located at the right side of my parents’ house, this serves as the water supply to our sitio most especially to those who don’t have any water connection from our local water district.

I remember when I was young, the water freely flowed out from a pipe and stored it in a concrete reservoir or basin thus, we commonly called it FLOWING. Water is abundant during my childhood days. FLOWINGs are common in our place. Due to the changing factor that affects our environment, the water has been pumped by a motor provided by our Brgy. Council few years ago. An elevated concrete tank of approximately 6 meter high was constructed and served as a water storage. Since the location is a stone-throw away from the sea, the motor pump didn’t survive from the rust and eventually been ruined. This prompted our local official to have it in manual pumping of water. The tank was left and has been useless since then.

This painting of mine shows the recent artesian that provide water to the residents in our barangay. Water is essential in everyday living, so, residents must value every drop of it because someday this shaft that is sunk into the ground will produce no more drinkable water and soon be gone.

Permanent tattoo is a marking made by inserting indelible ink into the layers of skin to change the pigment for decorative or other reasons. This art is done for body modification where needles with ink are injected the second layer of our skin which is the dermis.

Tattoo these days has been socially accepted. We can find everywhere people who love tattoo as their body decoration in expressing themselves. Tattoo has been gaining grounds in search term for the past few years from LYCOS - is a search engine and web portal with broadband entertainment content. Lycos dropped the term "tattoos" from its Poll because the term was so popular. According to Lycos, tattoos rarely drops out of the top ten search terms requested on the Internet and Lycos dropped the term because they wanted to make room for other searches.

Before I got a tattoo kit, tattoo designs from the net like the oriental dragons, Japanese kois, skulls, biomechanical to celtic and tribal designs had been saved for references. Thus, those weekends that I’m not around the city, I was tattooing some of my friends in my hometown (Hilongos, Leyte) for free. My works may not be as what they expected to be but I’m trying and practicing to be one real sick tattoo artist someday. (lol)

SINULOG 2010

January 17, 2010 - Sinulog, Cebu City. Streets were so busy, some access roads were blocked causing heavy traffics around the city. Saturday night we began our usual task in doing some henna works in celebrating the most awaited day early this year in Cebu City - Sinulog Grand Mardi Gras 2010.

We brought a tent for us to have a shelter at night and obviously to have an area for our henna tattoo by Sinulog day. Saturday night seemed didn’t sleep probably because people around the city were busy for the weeklong activities organized by the city government in preparation for the said festivity. Although it was almost 3am, there were still sightseers and rubbernecks wanted to have some henna tattoo.

By 6am, only a 2 hours sleep, CCPO were busy confiscating stalls, booths and other selling stands that weren’t able to secure some permit from the city government. They also wanted our tent to be wrapped up so as to clean the sidewalk. Without any argument, we cleared the area and waited till they’re gone.

After our breakfast, we set and readied our things since our customers seemingly increased in numbers. Raindrops made our shelter occupied by our customer-to-be and onlookers. Busyness of earning money tended us to almost forget our lunch. Although the weather seemed like playing that time our purse consistently increased its amount till 8pm.

We ended up our annual business as the flock of people stuck in front of Crown Regency where we were situated. We started of having this activity way back 1998 during college days. We were all architecture students that time. Now, that location become our rendezvous every Sinulog although we have different job and priorities in life.

CEBU PYROFEST 2010

January 16, 2010, Saturday. Skipping from our group’s annual commitment of preparing our area for henna tattoo during Sinulog, I went to Northwing of SM City Cebu at 6PM so as not to miss the 2nd PYROFEST organized by Pyroworks International, a company located in Cebu that specializes in the state of the art production of professional fireworks shows. 8 teams of fireworks companies from all over the Philippines gathered for this annual pyrotechnical competition.

The fireworks were truly amazing especially when the teams from the firework capital of the Philippines – Bulacan (Sta. Maria and Malolos). Their displays were so awesome just like a disco lights dancing in a beat of Sinulog which made the crowd applauded for appreciation. They made it to the 2 top spots (Champion and 1st Runner-Up respectively) placing the Team from Dumaguete in the third place.

Congratulations! Thanks to SM Cebu for the accomodation and Jonie’s Flavored Chicken for their free meal.

This my first pro tattoo kit given to me by a friend of mine, my fellow SOMnians – Mario Gamas Acson from UK. This kit is for permanent tattooing. December 27, 2009 - Baybay Airsoft Team (BAT) conducted their 4th Mayor Michael L. Cari Cup dubbed as Baybay Invasion II at the reclamation area during their annual city fiesta.

Teams of airsoft fanatics gathered early as the fine weather joins the celebration. 8 teams were competing for the customized trophies. In the long run as the points were tallied, we, the Wildcats of Hilongos Airsoft Team emerged victorious. We bagged the championship trophy with the Sioux of Isabel Leyte Airsoft Team as the 1st runner up.

Isip usa ka first timer nga moadto sa maong lungsod, nangita ko ug jeep nga kinahanglang front seat jud ko dili kay aron una moabot kaysa luyo (hahaha) apan aron dili masaag sa padulngan. Miabot ko sa maong lugar pasado ala una na sa kahapunon.

Una kong nahimamat si abai Noypi, bisdaker nga bag-uhay miabot gikan sa New York. Migahin gayod siya ug oras para Paskuhan sa Radyo Bisdak nga wala sad nagdugay kay mopauli pa sad siya sa Bohol. Gisugdan sa pag-ampo sa Kahitas-an isip pasalamat sa maanindot nga adlaw sa maong okasyon. Ang tinahod nga si Kapitan Rachel Wagas Canada, Brgy. Kapitan sa Poblacion Compostela mao ang mipadayag sa pulong pagsugat.

Nalingaw ko sa parlor games sa mga bata. Sa usa nga duwa, nangita si abai bahur (emcee) ug tsinelas nga blue. Ang unang makadala sa tsinelas mao mahatagan ug premyo. Nagdinaganay ang mga bata padulong sa atubangan. Diha’y usa ka bata nga sa iyang huna-huna dili na siya makadaug, gilabay ang tsinelas padulong sa emcee para maoy mauna ug abot (hahaha). Laing duwa diin padad-on ang bata sa iyang lola sa atubangan. Nakatawa ko kay usa ka lola unya upat ka bata nagbinirahay kinsay makadala ngadto sa atubangan. Wala nasayop akong huna-huna nga pulos gyud diay apo kadtong mga bataa (hahaha).

December 13, 2009 – Wildcats, Hilongos Airsoft Team organized and carried out a friendly 1st Hilongos Airsoft Tournament dubbed as Operation: Saving Camp Kapitan Kikoy held in HNVS - Hilongos, Leyte.

Kapitan Kikoy Flordelis was the known local war hero and a katipunan leader in town of Hilongos.

The tournament began with a motorcade around the town that was spearheaded by the organizers, traffic enforcers and the PNP personnel. Registration and the AEG chronometry was done past 9:00 AM due to the rainshower. After briefing the rules and regulations, the game started immediately. A close quarter battle of 12-man team playing in a 10 minutes time to finish the course or mission.

Last November 29, Tiger Commando of Ormoc Airsofters initiated a tournament dubbed as Operation: Flash Floods. It was held at the City Central School open ground. 15 teams of airsoft enthusiasts from Samar and Leyte gathered as early as 7:00am. We arrived at the venue just as the organizer started on briefing the rules and regulation, chrono for the AEG and elaborated the scenario of the game - capturing the flag. Western Alliance Group emerged as Champion and the SBAT or Sogod Bay Airsoft Team as the 1st runner-up.

FRAMEWORK
The objective of the rules and regulations of this competition is to set the framework for a competitive event conducted under a safe, fair, and sport-manlike manner.

It should also be noted that it is impossible to make rules for all eventuality and that there will be specific verbal rules attached to certain stages of the competition. It is therefore the responsibility of the team as a whole and the team leader in particular, to take note of these specific regulations and abide by them.

The OPERATION CKK, a friendly Airsoft Competition is facilitated by the Wild Cats (Hilongos Airsoft Team)

General Rules:
1. The facilitator reserves the right to accept or deny entry of any competitor and or team.
2. Each team can registered of up to a minimum of 15 soldiers.
3. The registration fee is non-refundable and is inclusive of:

4. Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis and will constitute full acceptance of the Game/technical/facilitator’s rules.
5. The competition is limited to only (10) teams, so send your registration fee earlier.
6. In-case of force majeure, the event may be modified, postponed or canceled.
7. Only registered players with signed waiver and the right outfit for the game will be allowed to play.
8. All teams must provide their own mandatory and optional equipment, borrowing of mandatory equipment from other teams is prohibited.
8. All teams will submit their final list of members one hour before the start of the competition. Or they can send their final list to the organizer as soon as possible the better.
9. Multiple registration or “proxy” playing is not allowed.
10. Violation to any of these rules will be grounds for disqualification.
11. Automatic Electric Guns only. Gas operated weapons, with the exception of pistols are prohibited. Maximum FPS is 450 @ 0.20 g BBs.

The fight in Nov. 14 will put Manny Pacquiao, if he wins, in boxing history as the greatest boxer of all time to win seven titles in seven different weight classes. His trainer Freddie Roach predicted that his man will take the belt by KO as early as the 1st round or late in the 9th or 10th round of the fight. Although Manny is the challenger in this World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title, he is undoubtedly the crowds’ favorite.

Manny stopped Dela Hoya and Hatton by KO in 9th and 2nd round respectively.

Manny Pacquiao’s eight weeks of training in Baguio and at the Wild Card gym will soon be uncovered at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada as he challenges the kingkong in this division. Roach is betting $3,000 for his man putting a thousand ($1,000) on the first round, on nine and ten.

On the other hand Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto’s camp is optimistic in their victory of the said fight dubbed as “FIREPOWER”. Hilongos Wildcats Team

Hilongos Wildcats Team initiated a friendly game among its members last Sunday, August 30 at the back of V-Hire terminal near the Caltex gasoline station along the highway. Airsoft enthusiasts from Baybay, Hindang and Hilongos gathered past 10 am. Though some members didn’t make it due their hectic scheds, we started the routine.

Gearing up protective suits and readying for close quarter battle, everyone seemed to be excited. Shields or obstacles were added in the game site just in case a lot of airsofters will join and the kill house was added as well. Eventually the teams made it even in share of comrades 7–7.

Initially, the objective style skirmish has been played economizing the bb pellets usage. Both teams were trying to capture the “flag” located at the center of the game site and we made 4 battles with that scene. In order for us to be fully entertained, someone suggested to have a head-to-head scenario specifically the front line airsoft skirmish, an assault of trying to eliminate each other’s team and made 6 encounters. The scene made my AEG run out of battery and we ended our friendly game leaving red rashes in my legs and chest. Ok lang sa chest pero sa tiil, midugo gyud…tsk tsk.

The Cross of Magellan

From the time immemorial this spot has been set aside to commemorate the erection of a cross in Cebu by the expedition of Magellan. When King Humabon of Cebu and his queen, son and daughters, together with some 800 of their subjects were baptized by Father Pedro Valderrama. This hallowed site was improved in 1735 by Rev. Juan Albarran, prior of San Agustin and in 1834 by Rt. Rev. Santos Gomez Marañon, bishop of Cebu. The image of Sto. Niño found by the expedition of Legaspi in a house near the present site of the Cathedral of Cebu is venerated by the faithful in the nearby Church of San Agustin.

The original cross planted by Ferdinand Magellan on April 21, 1521 is now encased of Tindalo wood.

Fuente Osmeña Park

Cebu’s premiere park that was built in honor of Cebu’s “Grand Old Man” President Sergio S. Osmeña Sr., who serve as the second President of the Philippine Commonwealth. It’s name literally means “Osmeña’s fountain”.

Throughout the history, the Fuente Osmeña Park has served as witness to many of Cebu’s significant gatherings, including the grand and colorful Sinulog festival that is held annually. The circle is a centerpiece landmark of the city and the site of numerous festivals and rallies.

In recognition of its legacy, the Fuente Osmeña Park is immortalized in the Philippine fifty peso bill. This landmark is indeed a source of pride for every Cebuano located along Jones Ave. and General Maxilom Ave. This was built during the founding of Cebu City's water system.

I was in Leyte when I saw the news in the television and read the header “Paalam Cory Aquino” before the tribute news “Salamat Cory” of GMA and “Salamat Presidente Cory” of ABS-CBN. I arrive in our house at 2:20am an hour earlier before our first lady president died on 3:18am at Makati Medical Center. It shocked and saddened me knowing that before her passing, the latest updates in her situation was that she responded positively from the treatment. This made me realized that true to her situation, they were just assuring the public’s calmness and steadfast support through prayers and the healing masses and that her family had decided to cease chemotherapy and other medical interventions.

She was born Corazon Cojuangco, an heiress to one of the great fortunes in the Philippines. In 1954, she married Benigno Aquino, one of the most ambitious and promising politicians in the country. Before they met, however, Benigno had dated a young beauty queen named Imelda Romualdez. Years later, his political career would turn him into the political nemesis of the man Imelda married, Ferdinand Marcos, who was elected president in 1965.

She was catapulted into politics following the murder of her husband, the prominent Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, who had been preparing to run for president. By the "People Power" uprising against the dictatorship of Marcos 1986, she became the Asia's first female president. In her term as president, she battled several coup attempts and protected the country's fledgling democracy and freed political prisoners.

TIME chose Corazon Aquino as its Person of the Year for 1986, recognizing her central role in one of the most compelling dramas in recent history — the widowed housewife who avenges her husband's death by overthrowing the regime widely blamed for his murder. She was the first woman to be designated TIME's Person of the Year since Queen Elizabeth II for 1952.

She was diagnosed with colon cancer on March 24, 2008 as publicly announced by her family member drawing supports through prayer nationwide. Mrs Aquino had been suffering from stage 4 colon when she died aged 76 on August 1, 2009 due to cardiopulmonary arrest after complications of colon cancer.

She left a big imprint on our history. She is the Icon of Democracy throughout the world. She is a great leader who set a shining example of peaceful transition to democracy in our country. Her courage, determination, and moral leadership are an inspiration to us all and exemplify the best in our nation.

Rainy Season

As the nimbus started to gather vaporized water from the earth, I felt that its grayish color means only a heavy rain will poured as soon as it can’t hold water’s relative mass.

It’s rainy season once again. City streets will experience one of its worst problem – flooding. I noticed that an average rainfall in an hour or more easily flooded the street just right across our office located at A. S. Fotuna St., Mandaue City. This causes heavy traffic of the public utility jeeps en route to Talamban from the highway. Others may say jokingly that it's time to see the Fortuna River. Flood shut some PUJ dead since the water level reaches the engine compartment. This the situation where the drivers feared most, stranded in the middle of the flood in a stationary vehicle with some passengers outburst in anger.

Public should always be reminded the usefulness of proper garbage disposal. Canals and drainages always overflow every rain because of the trash blockade of waterways in the system. So everytime we see a flooding street, don’t just blame it solely to the poor drainage system but inculcate also in mind that this is also a part of our negligence.

ASMSI-CEBU Sportsfest Opening 2009

June 14, 2009. I arrived as early as 7:00 am. Registration in-charges were ready for the arrival of the alumni. I proceeded to the canteen for my breakfast just to find out that the kettle for rice was used by our officers the day before the event. So I just have my breakfast of bingka, biko, cup of bulalo and a fried fish.

Past 8:00am, I can see alumni’s presence starting to fill the designated benches in the gymnasium and started to group themselves by batches. I’ve met some of the chatters as they made their way to the gym. Officers were so busy making sure of the activities’ success. All hail to them! The event made its distinction with the partnership of the media specifically the 94.7 Energy FM and SMART telecommunications.

The mass started with a procession for the feast of Corpus Christi or the commemoration of the institution of Eucharist which is also literally means ‘Body of Christ’. So as to have some blessing and will to lead the organization, a formal introduction to the new set of officers was done after the Holy Mass.

We felt uneasy especially our dear alumni president since alumni were already looking for the food. Some even sent me some messages if where the food was being served. We brought again the attention to our coop president Gilbert Nagaño about the food since it was a time for lunch. He called the caterer if they’re arriving in time and with the service malfunction, lunch was served past 1:oo pm. In times like this, you need juicy fruit gum. LOL. In a large crowd where food is to be served, it should always be ready ahead of time and 10:00 am will be a perfect for that. We’re so sorry for the untimely incident that has not been anticipated and so thankful for the alumni who did understand the situation though some have lost their temper. In behalf of the alumni cooperative, my deepest apology for the untoward situation it had caused. Let us unite and do what is best for the organization although shortcomings may arise. We didn't mean it that way and who would? After all, it was a lesson learned.

As the competing team per batches gathered inside the gym, crowd’s uproar made the ambiance so energetic and lively when the presentation of the muses began. Crowd’s favorite 14th batch snatched the Miss Energetic and Best in Production Number, 3rd batch as the Killer Smile and 13th batch as Miss Photogenic. My bet didn’t win, hmmm…zakaat. *rolling eyes. A beautiful acoustic intermission was rendered by Ray Cabasa aka hardwired and Zoraida Tablingon aka Gelin. Good job guys! Certificates were given to different batches as an appreciation for the unceasing support for the alumni organization and a special awards for the 94.7 Energy FM, EDM disco mobile and SMART communications for the partnership of the event.

Fireworks display ignited past 4:00 pm after the celebration that made the guard wondered what’s the thunderous bang about.

We departed 5:00 pm and took a ride in a KMK bus. Feeling exhausted, I found myself asleep on our way to SM. We took our dinner at Andoks Mabolo with sinigang and fried chicken in satisfying our craving stomach.

Our sincere appreciation to the alumni who rendered their support for the event and our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors 94.7 Energy FM, SMART, Dunkin Donuts, Coca Cola, and Nature Spring who made this successful. To those who were there, DAGHANG SALAMAT and let us continue to serve the Lord with joy!

Perhaps other Hilongosnon may ask about the building in our public market that was left unfinished. Projects as big as this one somehow needs a feasibility study before implementing. This has something to do with the vicinity map or the location for a detailed planning. This is a long term project that needs thorough study like this one which is located in the heart of our town.

A feasibility study is a process which defines exactly what a project is and what strategic issues need to be considered to assess its feasibility, or likelihood of succeeding. Feasibility studies are useful both when starting a new business, and identifying a new opportunity for an existing business. Ideally, the feasibility study process involves making rational decisions about a number of enduring characteristics of a project, including:

• What exactly is the project? Is it possible? Is it practicable? Can it be done?
(I guess this can be done after how many decades had passed with the current “situation”.)
• Economic feasibility, technical feasibility, schedule feasibility, and operational feasibility - are the benefits greater than the costs?
(Eventually, this only wasted our taxes where years had gone and didn’t served its general purpose.)
• Technical feasibility - do we 'have the technology'? If not, can we get it?
(I believe there’s a workforce and all resources needed are available.)
• Schedule feasibility - will the system be ready on time?
(This project was long overdue.)
• Customer profile: Estimation of customers/revenues.
(Since this building is left unfinished, the targeted revenues were not achieved)
• Operational feasibility - do we have the resources to build the system? Will the system be acceptable? Will people use it?
(This building is a purposeful project done for the betterment of Hilongos and its constituents and turned out to be a useless project and a waste of money.)

WHERE WAS THE STUDY???

For our councilmen, with this project at hand, what are your next steps for this? Do you let this building just stay rotten by time? Or have another building constructed like a mushroom that just grows anywhere without a long term purpose just like our DAR office or somewhat like temporary shelter waiting for the completion of our municipal mall, I mean municipal hall? Or maybe it is all about…hmmmmmm….money in the making. Well anyway, this is just my thought.

NBA FINALS 2009 - Orlando vs Lakers

Who will get the trophy for this season? Can Superman lift his team and dimmed Lakers brightness this Final round? Much from the media hyped rival of KB and LBJ, Magic downed the Cavaliers and the defending champion Boston in the playoff. It’s not Nike against Nike endorser. It’s between the erstwhile Adidas model that is now a Nike endorser KB24 and Adidas DH12. It is Magic against the world of basketball who believes that Lakers will win at 6.

Believing that they got 2-0 from the regular season against Lakers, Magic got some confidence in doing it again this Final. Superman’s area is in the paint setting the outer table especially in the arc for Orlando’s 3-point marksmen. Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis, Mickael Pietrus, Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston will bomb from outside.

Kobe is the man that Magic needs to deal with. His determination in every season and leadership for his teammates can’t be denied. When he is on fire, he is on fire and that made him hard to stop. Gasol has been more aggressive in his games, and Bynum appears to have a pulse. He will serve as the humps on Howard’s road. Ariza should always be at his high level of performance and match against Magic’s snipers. Odom seems to be finding a rhythm after nursing a sore back.

Who can stop Howard down low? If they double team DH, there’s a big chance of leaving shooters outside for free. If DH will guard Gasol, who’ll be at Bynum? Can Nelson play this time to help the Magic like what he did during their two meetings? Does a stage fright factor for the newbie in the Final matters as what the statistics say?

2-3-2 is the format of the game and we knew that Phil Jackson is 43-0 when his team wins the first game of a series but I got to believe in magic. Haha. Everybody focused on DH12 but HT15 can create mismatches within the game. I’m a fan for this underdog team. GO MAGIC…disappoint the majority including Barak Obama. Hahaha. Maayo unta ug makakawat bisag usa ka game ang Magic sa Staple Center sa 1st two games.

Two teams, Cebu Extreme Overclockers and Sugbo Elite Overclockers, showed their skills and outdoing each others in tweaking computer’s hardware to function above its original specs. Sugbo Elite Overclockers emerged as the overall winner for the said competition. Ambigram also sometimes known as an inversion, is a typographical design or artform that may be read as one or more words not only in its form as presented, but also from another viewpoint, direction or orientation. The words readable in the other viewpoint, direction or orientation may be the same or different from the original words. (wikipedia)

Few years back I was reading on John Langdon’s artwork about ambigram. I was fascinated the swiftness of his letters and its stroke. He created the Angels and Demons ambigram a book from the bestselling author Dan Brown which eventually became a movie. John Langdon’s artwork includes in the top 10 most famous ambigrams. Dan Brown used Langdon (Robert) as the main character in his books in gratitude to John’s creativeness for the ambigrams.

I have created some ambigrams before. Some words were easy to transform and invert while other may take a lot of time. This one (cebubloggerssociety) was done yesterday. I hardly get this completed because in the first place I’m not used in doing this mind boggling artwork and I can’t fused two letters that can be read inversely into different letters. As a result, letters R and S in BLOGGERS blended yielding an optical illusion.

Hayden Kho is 28 years old and a young doctor who hailed from Marinduque, and who is only an employee of Belo Medical Group. He became popular in a Kapuso show entitled Celebrity Duet which slot was purposely for Vicky Belo who refused and gave to him instead.

Mother’s Day is celebrated every second Sunday of May. This was created by Anna Marie Jarvis in honor for her mother. This has been observed by sending cards and flowers to the mothers throughout the world. Her name seems close to my dear wife Anna Mae, the mother of my beloved daughter. We simply celebrated it by attending mass and have our bonding moments in the house with our daughter Alexandra.

Philipine Education

Teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professions.

A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others but among professionals, teachers receive the lowest monthly salary. Old issue that our teachers faced up and dealing with is work overloading. This is a situation where they can’t evade due to shortage of teachers. In its Memorandum No. 29 issued last June 13, the Department of Education (DepED) instructed public school teachers “to fully utilize the six hour actual classroom teaching time.” This means that a teacher must spend six hours facilitating classes. But this memorandum, as I observed with my wife, might prevented her from doing other things like writing lesson plans and preparing instructional materials. It also stated that teachers are not exempted from the eight-hour working time. Thus, the remaining two hours should be spent for activities “within or outside school premises to comply with the eight-hour workday.” But according to the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) teachers are to spend “not more than six hours” for actual classroom teaching based on the Magna Carta for Public School Teachers.

Petition to increase the salary of our public school teachers still circulating through the net. I am joining this cause in alleviating the stressful life and the worsening working conditions of our teachers. Teachers comprise one-third of the 1.5 million government employees as per ACT. Their disconcerting plight contributes largely to the deterioration of the state of Philippine education.

Read this petition and join us in raising the banner of our beloved teachers. In behalf of my wife, I have signed this petition (see no.198 of this petition) just to upgrade the education system of our country. If the foundation is weak, the building will undoubtedly collapse.

SWINE FLU (H1N1)

WHAT IS SWINE FLU?

Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs cause by type A influenza viruses (H1N1 subtype) that causes outbreaks in pigs. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen.

Swine flu viruses have been reported to spread from person to person, but in the past, this transmission was limited and not sustained beyond three people. Because it is a new strain, the body’s natural immunity to it is low.

IS THERE A HUMAN VACCINE TO PROTECT FROM SWINE INFLUENZA?

There are no vaccines that contain the current swine influenza virus causing illness in humans. It is not known whether current human seasonal influenza vaccines can provide any protection. Influenza viruses change very quickly. It is important to develop a vaccine against the currently circulating virus strain for it to provide maximum protection to the vaccinated people. This is why WHO needs access to as many viruses as possible in order to select the most appropriate candidate vaccine virus.

WHAT DRUGS ARE AVAILABLE FOR TREATMENT?

Antiviral drugs for seasonal influenza are available in some countries and effectively prevent and treat the illness. There are two classes of such medicines. 1) adamantanes (amantadine and remantadine), and 2) inhibitors of influenza neuraminidase (oseltamivir and zanamivir).

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of swine flue in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include Fever (greater than 100º F or 37.8ºC), Cough, Sore Throat, Body Aches, Headache, Chills and Fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu.

In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

HOW DOES SWINE FLUE SPREAD?

Spread of this swine flu A (H1N1) virus is sought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

HOW CAN SOMEONE WITH FLU INFECT SOMEONE ELSE?

Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO KEEP FROM GETTING THE FLU?

First and most important: Wash your hands. Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food. Try not to touch surfaces that may be contaminated with flu virus.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

• Avoid live animal markets, poultry and pig farms in infected countries
• Always maintain high level of personal hygiene especially before and after food preparation and in-out of toilets. Regularly wash your hands.
• Cook pork thoroughly.
• Do not consume half done pork.
• While in an affected region, seek immediate medical attention if you develop influenza-like symptoms. (high fever, body pain, coughing and red nose)

CBS Summer Night Camp Out 2009

MENDOZA'S Residence - The VENUE

April 18, 2009. Summer Night Camp Out for the CBS was held @ Mendoza’s residence in Jardin de Busay. Bloggers gathered at the assembly area – McDonald @ JY Square. Guided by the itinerary posted by Jorich in our forum, we proceeded to the venue since it was time for us to depart.

As we arrived, we immediately went to the gazebo (a roofed structure that offers an open view of the surrounding area, typically used for relaxation or entertainment) near the pool where we put our bags, sit and came to rest for a while. Since Guada wasn’t able to come, GTKY was lead by Vanjohnn. I’m glad to know that some members were from Leyte, a province where I was raised (dili kanang gi-isa). After our dinner, we’re grouped into two, Papalicious and Wangwang (where I belong, dili GMA ha).There’s so much fun as we started our games. Acting like a mute (lisoda diay oi) in describing and visualizing the given subject made the gazebo full of laughter.

Chillax time! We went to the pool and had some drink (El Hombre) while others had their videoke session. When all were finally gathered at the poolside past 12 midnight, everyone started sharing their jokes. I was lying in the chaise lounge feeling so sleepy when Ryan gave a joke about “dili ko magsaba, dili ko magsaba” and “ako Jesus? Ako Jesus?” that cause us to roar into laughter.
Then, Timoy fell asleep…(ambot unsa na tong orasa)

I woke up 5:00 am and the first person I saw was Mikyu (abi nako ug mommy ni Vanjohnn nag-jogging, mao nimata nlng sad ko). Everybody was already awake by 6:00 am (morag dli man everybody cguro kay wla man to natulog ang uban, hahaha). We had our breakfast before we started our leisurely walk down the valley. Scenic view was so refreshing and as a part of our physical exertion everyone, I think, perspired (Aldwin naligo sa singot).

It was such a worth remembering event for CBS bloggers. All hail CBS!

April 11, 2009 Black Saturday, our Brgy. Council conducted a meeting for the preparation of our barangay (also known by its former Spanish adopted name, the barrio, is the smallest administrative division in the Philippines and is the native Filipino term for a village, district or ward) fiesta. EXECOM presented some details concerning the flow of activities for a weeklong celebration. Suggestions and ideas came popping out from the constituents who wanted our activities to be more festive and memorable. As usual, there’s a band that will awaken the residents at dawn, basketball tournaments, parlor games and most especially the holy mass was on the top list.

Beautification in each sitios (A sitio in the Philippines is a territorial enclave that forms part of a barangay, the location of which may be distant from the center of the barangay itself. During Spanish occupation, sitios were named to make a centralized government for municipalities through the barrio system now called barangay.) is funded for a certain amount ensuring the somber ambiance into a cheerful and jovial celebration. Sunday morning when we began gathering things needed for the materialization of the design that abruptly came into my mind - our patron, St. Peter which is oriented in a Rastafarian colors. It was just a second idea because it was actually the face of the reggae king Bob Marley convinced me to use such colors. Since it’s for our fiesta, the aforementioned design was agreed. We cut red, yellow and green charrol (can't find in dictionary but it is acolored plastic ) for our flaglets (word that doesn’t exist in dictionary too but often used) and stapled it in a tiny rope and in a solid colors. Though the amount allotted for our street décor run out of budget, the effort and the assistance rendered by our neighbors uplifted me to keep going for a two days work. We solicited donations from our kind-hearted neighbors and friends. Monday night, all work has been done. It was our plan to have it before Tuesday since I’ll be leaving for Cebu.

Our sitio which was newly created got its name from a nearby creek. We collectively and decided to call it as CREEKSIDE. Residents here are the dwellers from the shore whose houses were destroyed by the intense low-pressure weather and always been affected by an uncontrollable sea wave especially during high tide. Since we’ve known each other, the spirit of bayanihan (is a Filipino term taken from the word bayan, referring to a nation, town or community. The whole term bayanihan refers to a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective or helping each other in completing the colossal task) enticed us to start working for the beautification. Albeit no prize guaranteed for such décor but at least we showed to the other sitios of our barangay that we got our strength through our unity.

My fellow citizens:

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because we the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land — a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted — for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things — some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.

For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.

For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sanh.

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All this we will do.

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions — who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them — that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. Those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account — to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day — because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control — and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our gross domestic product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart — not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our founding fathers ... our found fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all the other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort — even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to the suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment — a moment that will define a generation — it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.

For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends — hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism — these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility — a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.

This is the price and the promise of citizenship.

This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed — why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent Mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.

So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:

"Let it be told to the future world ... that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet (it)."

America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

CEBU BLOGGGERS SOCIETY, December 13, 2008 – The weather was fine. I grabbed my bag after work goin’ to the assembly area not minding the traffic that may hinder my minutes ride. That was my second meet up with the group since I joined CBS last October. It was past 3pm when CBS thronged inside McDonald located at JY Square, Lahug and later that time we collectively decided to proceed to the venue.

We took an enjoyable ride before reaching Mendoza’s Residence @ Jarden de Busay. Although the road of the village is steep and winding but the views of impressive and beautiful natural sceneries made us appreciate the place. It was so relaxing and you can feel freshness of the environment. Everyone got time to mingle, chat and others were busy taking some pictures. Am not that lucky because my camera was borrowed. I’m fond and taking pictures and love photography as one of my hobbies. Other members were busy sharing the work in preparing for food in the kitchen.

The party began by introducing every CBS member at the theater room. Ambiance inside the room was so joyous and euphoric especially when the creative slideshow of the Never Ending Story and the videos presented by Vanjhnn . The talents of our own CBS spokesman Kevin Ray Chua , his Inglisera lip-synching, and Obnoxious Queer's Take A Bow of Rihanna have been presented. I’ve seen Kevin's rendetion before in youtube but didn't actually knew him till I became a member of this society. Am a bisrock fanatic since the birth of the BUGS. Cheers bisrockers!

Dinner time – the food served was so delectable and mouthwatering especially the bok choy (pechay gud). I love that vegetable viand (sud’an ba). As the group having our good time for the midday meal, lights from the cities started to illuminate and brighten up the night sky contrasting the gloomy mountain on the other side. After we satiated our stomach, we proceeded to the living area for the awarding of certificates.

A recognition that was just for fun and was decided by the majority of votes (kabantay ko dihay flying voters ato…hahaha. juk). Bloggers who got most of the awards were Clado and X. If my memory serves me right, these are the awardees:

Church of Hilongos, Leyte

The Immaculate Concepcion Parish is located only across the Municipal Hall. The Church is a 17th century edifice as presented in the landmark put up by the National Historical Commission. The “cota” that encircles the church was constructed in that year to protect the church from the marauding “moros”.

Hilongos Church is a classic example of a well-preserved fort (cota) and church. Hilongos way back in 1700’s was already a parish with its neighboring towns included as its jurisdiction. In Palompon, early settlers sailed to Hilongos to attend masses every Sundays. The belfry of the 270-year old stone church in Hilongos, Leyte and the fortification of stone around the church was built to protect the early settlers from the onslaught of Moro raids. The frequent Moro raids made the Leyte churches unique, with fortification of massive coral stones.

The church in Hilongos was buit in 1737, but during the American occupation, a Katipunero, Francisco “Kikoy” Flordeliz, was forced to surrender by the US forces, but he refused. The whole town of Hilongos was burned including the church. But the ruin was masterfully renovated not to touch the original architectural make-up of the structure. The old church is still there, but an extension was built in 1960’s. The ruin of the altar was transformed into a devotional garden (dagkutanan) with statues of saints and decorated with ornamental plants and flowers.

It is quite clear that the church complex underwent major renovations over the centuries. The old entrance, formerly the main entrance to the fort, is now blocked. Area in this side now became a school (St. Therese School of Hilongos) and the old nave converted to the transept of a new church. A newer convent has been built inside the fortification that guards many of the church’s antiques including silver vessels from the 18th century. The church interior is completely new in contrast to the convent which may have been completed in the 19th century.

The bell tower build by Fr. Celis-Diaz is an independent multi-story structure, now plastered over with Portland cement. Examination of extant remains indicate that the church and the surrounding walls were built as one ensemble and is akin to 18th century construction. Some bastions and walls of the original church’s fortification still remain. A fortification surrounds the church to which an older church façade is attached suggesting that the fort was coeval to this old structure.

People of this generation treated these architectural heritage sites differently, people wanted to make the place integral to modern fortifications walls and some bastions remain. Now, effort to preserve and protect the Hilongos church is a joint undertaking of the parish and the local government unit. History-conscious Hilongosnons wanted these walls to remain untouched and preserved the church ruin. Today, only in Hilongos, where we can find a church with a fortification.

Last week, I was searching for the printable t-shirts designs that were compiled in a box for quite sometime. As I scoured every page, my seascape painting that was done 4 years ago was unearthed. This was my first painting made since I was working in Mark David Export Services, Inc. (Hospitality Design Furniture company) and the first painting that was uploaded in my friendster and zorpia account as well.

Way back on college days, I have done a lot of paintings and lost due to negligence and misplacement. Every Architecture Week, for the sake of being different, my entries in the course of exhibit were watercolor paintings. Other paintings were gone. I just don’t know where did my brother have it after their school art display event(tsk tsk…sayang).

By now, am collecting and having my artwork framed as soon as Im done with it. This seascape painting measures 13”W x 9”H with frame.

Kalingawan

This blog was stagnant for almost a year and was activated just recently. My hobby suggested to me set my blog going. Since my artworks keep on coming and so do with my blogging. Every free time in my work, I do some sketching to pen and ink. My subjects are those I often see in my hangouts (websites, blogs, friendster, photobucket and picasa web albums). Be my friend and I’ll draw you (kidding).

Sketching sharpens an artist's ability to focus and has often been a prescribed part of artistic development for students like me. I’m still learning and eager to learn more from pro’s tips and advice. It is more artistic to see some artworks done by hand or manually than by a computer. Sketches are inexpensive and allow the artist to try out different ideas and establish a composition before committing to an expensive and time-consuming painting. Usually, I do some sketching as a guide before applying watercolor on my paper.

Common instruments in sketching and drawing include graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons, charcoals, chalk, pastels, markers, stylus, or various metals like silverpoint. Each of these artworks only took less than an hour to finish. Am using faber- castell mechanical pencil 0.5, stabilo boss, mongol 1 and pilot G-TEC-C3 and C4 pens. Some of these can be seen in my friends’ blogs, monitor’s screensaver, friendster and other used their drawn face as an avatar or computer icon.

Dump Truck

Watching art exhibits and reading books about paintings somehow gave me an idea in getting some subjects which are unusual in formal photography. Taking some pictures and uploading it a computer won’t bother my decision of cropping images in what subject I wanna get. Since I got my own digicam, my hand never ceases in clicking its button just to take some photos especially during weekend although some were blurry and unlikable. I’m not pro into it. Shots were taken in different angles not once nor twice but many times in different mode so that I can select the best of it – best for watercolor painting.

Tonal values in painting matters a lot. I didn’t have any formal education in this kind of messy work. We once took some basic application in color mixing during our college days but not that much since architecture cater mainly in designing. Some artists who are not used in watercolor may find it hard than painting in oil or pastel. Water is an active and complex partner in the watercolor painting process, changing both the absorbency and shape of the paper when it is wet and the outlines and appearance of the paint as it dries. The difficulty in watercolor painting is almost entirely in learning how to anticipate and leverage the behavior of water, rather than attempting to control or dominate it. Watercolor paints don’t have a high hiding power as oil and pastel, so the previous touch of the color can’t be painted over. Since paper is absorbent so the paints cannot simply be scraped off like oil paint from a canvas.

This painting which I entitled “Dump truck” 22”W x 18”H has been done and completed within 21 hours in 5 sessions since I can only paint after my days work. I used Prang watercolor and got only 3 brushes. Although nightime is not advisable because the illumination may affect the color I’ve applied, I finished it due to constraint of time . My subject, ruined by time, is still located beside the Hilongos Gymnasium and a few meters away from our Public Engineers Office (PEO). Some of the dump trucks or heavy equipments were purposely scrapped instead of keeping it rusted and only I can remember, those were my play structures during my childhood days.

Laughing Jesus

This was done in a single night after work. A friend of mine requested me to paint an image of a laughing Jesus. No verse in the bible which tells us that Jesus laughed. His laughter wasn't recorded in the Gospel but I guess Jesus Christ got some time to laugh for He was a real, flesh-and-blood human being. This image has another side to it. This may connotes a laughter of hope and joy in the face of despair in spite of poverty and injustice suffered by poor people around the world. This image of Jesus speaks of hope that the chains of oppression will be broken and we will be free to become all what we are meant to be in God's grace.

Golden Boy vs Pacman

It hasn’t been an easy match to make. Both boxers must make physical sacrifices for the 66.5-kilogram (147-pound) bout, with De La Hoya dropping down to welterweight for the first time in seven years while Pacquiao bulks up to the heaviest weight of his career by far.

At any rate, observers believe the fight could easily rival the blockbuster encounter between De La Hoya and Mayweather last year which reportedly grossed $120 million, including the pay-per-view buys which generated a record $2.4 million.

If the fight earns $100 million, Pacquiao stands to get his biggest paycheck ever—estimated at $15 million.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach also said a victory would open the floodgates for even bigger fights for the Filipino icon.

The two boxers agreed to fight at a catch weight of 147 pounds and use eight-ounce gloves.

De La Hoya would be banking on his size but he will have to shed pounds and thus give up some strength to make the 147-pound weight. The 1992 Barcelona Olympic lightweight gold medalist fought heaviest at 160 lb against Felix Sturm for the WBO middleweight title.

The last time De La Hoya (39-5-0, 30 KOs) fought as a welterweight was in 2001. In his last fight, against Steve Forbes last May, he weighed in at 150 lb but entered the ring at 154 lb.

De La Hoya has won six titles in six different weight classes and has taken on practically every fighter who has donned the mythical best pound-for-pound crown.

However, he lost to the four biggest names he has encountered—Shane Mosley twice, Felix Trinidad, Bernard Hopkins and Mayweather Jr.

Roach said speed and youth would be the weapons of Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KOs), who started his career at 106 lb. He has won four titles in four different categories, snatching the lightweight title from David Diaz last June.

Pacquiao will have to move up to welterweight to fight De La Hoya, a surprising weight surge for a fighter who began his career as a minimum weight boxer.

Roach has said his fighter won’t have trouble maintaining his peerless hand speed at that weight, since Pacquiao routinely puts on 4 kilos (10 pounds) or more in the 24 hours between weighing in for his bouts and actually stepping in the ring.

HILONGOS sundown

City nightlife won’t really lure me but instead it gives me time to relax by painting some photos. Sometimes we hanged out just to break the monotony of our daily routine but not that often. After a long strenuous habit in my work, I often go home by weekend spending time with my family and recurrently visit my parents who are still residing near the sea. Albeit in just a matter of a day, my weeklong exhaustion has been soothed by the grin of my daughter (Alexandra) and a care from my loving wife (Mailyn) but it’s all worth it. Our life is not for complaint but for satisfaction. It was also relaxing taking some photos of the sunset in our place especially when the sun seemed like floating in the sea with a fire-like burning rays and reflection. Sitting in the sand, watching my daughter playing and running around and feel the placidity of the sea was so invigorating. Children playing in the shore, as the sun changed its color, somehow made me reminisced my past. I’ve been there and done that. During my elementary days, I used to draw in the shore after school till murkiness fall. Stick was my pen, the sand was my canvas and the shore was my playground. Nobody of any real culture, for instance, ever talks nowadays about the beauty of sunset. Sunsets are quite old fashioned. To admire them is a distinct sign of provincialism of temperament. Upon the other hand they go on. I used to love its beauty thus, whenever Im home, I used to stay in my parent’s house after noon waiting for the sun to sink below the horizon.

Nature's Fury

I have searched all my stored photos for the pictures taken late last year in front of my parents' house before it was hit by the unlikely waves just recently. I just want to compare it with the present situation. Actually, 18 years ago, fronting our house was the barangay road and the neighboring houses. And currently, my parents house is just a meters away from the shore (see picture of a window below). Although I got no pictures to show those existing residential houses before, I draw it for your visualization.

Since we’re located in a typhoon prone region, Eastern Visayas, just a low pressure that swirls off the area yields serious effects. In the early 80’s, LGU built a barrier to protect our coast from the force of waves which we locally called sea wall (breakwater).

Due to this occurrence, gradual changes are apparent along the shoreline in our place (Brgy. Pontod, Hilongos, Leyte). Houses in this area were slowly destroyed until fully eradicated by the mid 90’s.

Since nature’s wrath is irrepressible, our parents decided to relocate their house for a safer place though their source of living rely only in fishing. In point of fact, just a moderate waves during hide tide, living, dining and kitchen areas will be washed with water and sand.

Residents accused the reconstruction of our port as the main cause why our shoreline has been slowly swallowed. I won't totally agree BECAUSE in a broader sense, these changes are the result form GLOBAL WARMING due to humanity's negligence.

sakayan ni tatay

This picture was taken after a stormy weather in our place, specifically Hilongos, Leyte. Fishing boats usually conceal from the rough and wavy seas when low pressure hits the area. So I took a picture of my father’s boat that was anchored at the nearby creek just a few meters away from our house. As I uploaded all the pictures in my camera, this photo enticed me to paint it in watercolor. Thus, without hesitation, I just let my time after work to pass till I felt sleepy with this painting and made 5 sessions to complete. This artwork was added to the personal collection of my own paintings.

My Mother for 4 years

Born into Eternal life: August 9, 2008

Sr. Elizabeth Meriño, SM was born on March 4, 1959 in Leyte, Philippines. On June 8, 1986, with her desire of helping the Lord in the person of the poor, she joined the Sisters of Mary which at that time was newly established by the Servant of God, Msgr. Aloysius Schwartz.
Throughout her religious life, she continuously took care of children at Boystown and Girlstown of the Sisters of Mary. She was always simple, cheerful, gentle and loving. She was always concerned with the children's welfare not just their material and physical needs but above all their spiritual improvement. Thus, she had a lot of zeal in teaching catechism even if at times, she had severe sore throat and even lost her voice. She loved teaching the last mysteries in order to prepare the children for eternal happiness. She taught not only in words but also through her hard work and her practice of virtues. Whenever she was offended, she was ready to forgive and forget the past. She also loved recruiting the children even how difficult the travel and circumstances were. She endured all with patience and joy in order to save souls. She had special concern for those who are orphans and abandoned children to the extent that sometimes she was misunderstood by others.
She always some little physical pains but it did not bother her nor complained. When she could no longer bear the pain, she informed the superior about it. Then she submitted herself to medical check-up and was found out that she needed surgery.
On October 8, 2007 she underwent operation at Doty Memorial Hospital in Seoul, Korea and was diagnosed that she had cancer and it was in an advanced stage. She accepted it with serenity and total resignation to God. Since May of 2008, she could not go out from her room anymore but she remained cheerful and even cracked jokes to those who visited her. According to her, she was like Jesus nailed to the cross. She continued praying the rosary and listening to Fr. Al's recorded religious tapes.
On June 13, 2008, on a wheelchair with dextrose, she managed to attend Mass and joined her sisters in renewing their religious vows. For the last time, she joined the sisters' breakfast and happily shared her laughter with them.
On August 8, 2008 at around 4:00 p.m., she felt difficulty in breathing. A priest administered the last sacraments and after communion, she smiled beautifully. She was looking for Mother Michaela, the superior of the Sisters of Mary, to ask permission to go to. The sisters asked where should she go. "To heaven!" she said loudly.
Finally, the following day at exactly 5:00 a.m., her breathing stopped. After a few minutes her face shone with much peace and serenity describing the joy of a faithful, a true disciple and a spouse of the Lord Jesus.
"I have fought a good fight. I have kept the faith. From now on, the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge will award me." (2Tim.4)

UTLANAN

I was taking pictures especially the landmarks in our town for my friend who has been off the country for almost 15 years. I started it with our barangay bridge, the one that connected Sitio Cansurima and Sitio Fishpond to the mainland. I'm talking about my birthplace here, Brgy. Pontod, Hilongos, Leyte. It was the shot that attracted me to have it in paint. More often than not, I like to paint views with reflections. Utlanan means boundary. This painting measures 18" x 22" with frame and its medium - watercolor.

This painting was asked by my sister and I gave it hesitatingly because we're planning to have it in our planned exhibit which was not realized. Unfortunately, she gave it to her costumer for FREE. If I had known that that would be the case I shouldn't have it given beforehand.

Reflection

I was in Leyte on mid-september for a weekend's rest. Having borrowed Steph's (high school batchmate) camera, I began strolling early in the morning to take some pics and feel the cool breeze at the seashore. On my way home, reflections of the videokehan's posts in the nearby creek got my attention. So I went down from the bridge where I was situated and have myself positioned in my desired angle. After noticing that it might be great to create a wavy reflections, I threw some stones in the water and *CLICK!

Since I'm fond in watercolor paintings thus, I painted it for my personal collection.
